Spindleworks Peace Book Workshop:

Group poem:

End the war and spend the money on:

Pizza
a mansion, shopping spree, white limo
(she's reading my mind!)
hot tub, sauna, massage
and free ice cream ...
give half to the people who don't have food
thinking of people somewhere else who
don't have food or clothes or shoes
help people start building their city back up again
build schools for people
help people get their businesses back on their feet
Pay Liz McGhee more money

Poem by Nancy Bassett:

my big brother
is in the service
in the Army
marching
the army is for shooting
shooting a gun
have to have a gun in the army
bullet
they shoot people
a man
bad man
no good man
Not my big brother

A poem by Diane Black:
Down on the mall
they had part of a building
they climbed up it
they had tents and cannon
it makes me feel sad
about my father,
when he was in the army

and a Peace poem by Anna McDougall:

Peace

1 Peace in the Middle East
2 Peace Mon
3 Peace Out
4 Get peace pops by Ben & Jerry
5 listen to peaceful easy feeling by the allman brothers
6 Being Peaceful
7 Listen to the Youngbloods Get Together
8 No War
9 No fighting
10 No arguments
11 Being thankful for Peace
12 Close Down the Navy Base

and from Helen Warren:
It would be peaceful if the Red Sox would win the World Series like they did in 1994.

In our hearts, minds and souls peace is all we want, but we must work for it because it can't be bought.
Everyone needs peace, everyone needs love and everyone should stop the fighting and pray to God above.
To accomplish world peace world hunger must stop, the war must end, crime must cease until nobody needs a cop.
So if you ever need any help don't be afraid to ask, it doesn't matter how hard it gets I know we can complete the task.
Don't you see it could be great, fear would come to an end, and everyone would have a wonderful life and laugh again and again.

My vision of peace!

Peace for insects
peace for pests
peace for nature
not just us.
Peace for anything
that is hated
peace for all
the bugs on earth.

Don't annihilate

Don't annihilate en masse
the cratures that bother you:
mice, rats, Japanese beetles, squash bugs, weeds;
coyotes, mosquitoes, vespids, aphids.

If you must kill them,
kill them one by one.

Remove the mouse from the trap;
feel sorry about its broken neck, its
popped-out eyes. Take a moment for its
kids, who will die at
home, waiting for Mom.
Drop it in the compost,
fling it into the woods or bury it at sea,
in the toilet.

Swat a mosquito.
Drop Japanese beetles one by one
into a coffee can of detergent water.
Let those who escape buzz, startling, past your ear.
There will be enough raspberries left,
enough hazelnuts, for you.

Do not annihilate en masse.
Then you know you are killing
and whom you are killing.
Then you feel you are killing.
And when you are sick of killing,

You can stop.

Peace is

in the garden, pulling weeds, watching
plants grow

walking to town, doing errands, meeting
friends

enjoying home, so cozy, eating home
grown foods

loving family, observing children as
they grow

Each simple joy I pray for you and me.

What this world needs ( short rap)

Dear planet earth, let me ask you somethin
I need to know, why our lives are crumblin?
I don't understand why we all have to fight each other
we all sisters and brothers, who cares if we different colors?
So what if we have different religions and visions
why do we try to put all that into submission?
I say that there should be no division between us
why we fight and fuss? ask I must
Why is there only hate and no trust?
Why we such a nation full of discrimination?
You know what? my best friend is Caucasian
and I'm Mexican, we got different colored skin, but we still tight!
In the end we all followin' the same light!
I think our world is very confused
Why is poor people bein left out and abused?
Why do we lie? Why do we steal? I'm embarrassed to live here
the embarassment is barely enough to be concealed.
I think all we have to do is get along
You know keeping it real? Why don't we all hang out?
Get together maybe talk over a slice of pizza
You don't get it? Well me Neith'uh
I guess peace is just hard to find, cuz violence is all we seem to mind.
I see that now our world is corrupted with violence
I hope that after listening to this y'all will help it be silenced
I can't help but sympathize with peoples' yells, screams and cries.
The violence brings tears to my eyes, why do we feel left out
and despised? The peace should be gathered up and improvised.
It comes as no surprise that this is the generation of beatin people down because
they poor, insult people, and rob general stores. And we wonder
why there's so many gang wars, why we so obsessed
with wheels and drugs? Guess some of us think we thugs.
But we ain't all supposed to be thugs and settle problems with a few
ball bats and knives what's so wrong with seein each other alive?
In the sixties everyone was either called sister or brothers,
They wouldn't be mean and beat down on each other, and yes I know they were
weird back then cuz they was wearin' peace bandanas on they heads,
But they wouldn't fight they'd get along instead!
Anyone who's anyone listen to me! just listen to these words and you will see
just how bad this world has turned out to be, people these days full of hate
and greed, it's no wonder everyone wants to see someone bleed instead of
helping each other in our time of need, I can't believe what this world is turnin
into and what everyone has to go through, I don't know why we showin so much
disrespect and why everyone wants to give each other heck! or why everyone
disses they mama, I have no need to hear about all this nonsense and drama.

The clouds blow gently in the wind as scents of summer
flowers breeze into the lungs of mankind.
Peace, Love, and Tranquility is thee thoughts of mankind who
live in Paradise.
No War or Famine, a land where everyone is equal, no
lesser of man is found here.
The land is pure and Honey runs like Rivers.
A Paradise Where winter never happens and fruit grows on
trees like money.
Poverty is a thing of the past.
Peace is fully achieved in a land like thee, but sadly in our
dreams is where we can find true Peace and Harmony.

Chad Brassard, 16

PEACE IS....

Stop hate start peace!

Stop the war, stop the hate, start the peace, it's a time to celebrate, not to increase
the death rate. Stop the war, stop the hate, start the peace, it's time to regenerate,
alleviate, and begin to cooperate, not to discriminate. Power is not important, relaxation
is key, respect is cool, helpfulness not selfishness, and a kind heart is peace.

Ignore the evil within and it shall go away. Kindness to all beings Alien (not from
Earth) Animals, and Plants, even Evil. No judgement on others that says they are bad.
Kindness can heal any wound, even evil. Don't bother with getting rid of evil it will go
away, if kindness is there to help it.

To be kind is to be RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, POLITE,
CONSIDERATE,SAFE,KIND,SHARING,CARING,COOPERATIVE,
UNDETSTANDING,FORGIVING,AND HELPFUL.

Tim R Carter, 15

Since the pen of the poet is mightier than the sword of the warmakers, we wisely turn to writers like Mary Oliver and Wendell berry to restore our dream of lasting peace. Here is an excerpt from Seamus Heaney's The Cure At Troy: A Version of Sophocles' Philoctetes from which we can drink deeply:

History says: "Don't hope
on this side of the grave."
But then, once in a lifetime
the longed- for tidal wave
of justice can rise up,
and hope and history rhyme.

So hope for a great sea-change,
on the far side of revenge.
Believe that a further shore
is reachable from here.
Believe in miracles
and cures and healing wells.

Gloria Hutchinson, Brunswick

Envisioning Peace

The sun
warm-fingered
filters through
the new green leaves
of ancient trees
I have been before,
I shall come again,
with peace, for eternity.
